about
The directive “live, laugh, love” is not insidious by nature. In fact, it sounds like a pretty nice way to live. Still, for most of us, coming across the phrase - most commonly adorning throw pillows, welcome mats, and coffee mugs of a certain flavor of white suburbanite - induces an immediate eye-roll. Do we really need a daily reminder to do things as simple as live, laugh, and love? Still, of the myriad visual messages we encounter from the outside world each day, it’s probably one of the most benign. Why, then, has it alone become the site of so much public vitriol?
These are the questions that Gel Set asks in her brand new single “It Has Come To Our Attention”. Her first new release since 2017’s captivating Body Copy, “It Has Come To Our Attention” is a tongue-in-cheek rumination on media manipulation, power dynamics, and tacit misogyny. Over a pulsating, infectious bassline, a distorted authoritarian voice commands us to “Live, Laugh, Love” or die. In the accompanying video, directed by and starring Callier herself, two women are chased by a sinister off-camera assailant, culminating in their (apparent) demise. Between dance breaks, Callier asks us to consider the messages we internalize each day, and how we decide which ones to take seriously. It’s not mocking, to be sure - Gel Set’s dance floor is open to basic bitches, too.
Both the track and the video showcase this winking levity that fans have come to expect from Gel Set. There are new tones here as well, owed in part to Noah Anthony (AKA Profligate), who mixed and co-produced the song, contributing the bassline that underscores the ominous vocals. “It Has Come To Our Attention” is a glittering taste of more to come from Gel Set - that is, as long as we obey her message.
